Unisoft is always available
for phone or online help with any installation issues.
Typically, installing
and running the Unisoft software goes smoothly without any issues.
However, in recent years, there has been a rise in installation issues for all
types of software due to increased security measures by Information Technology
(IT) departments against malicious viruses, etc. These increased security
measures can cause issues with the necessary read/write file and folder
permissions and other access required for any software to run properly.
Issues have been reported by IT departments which have installed the Unisoft
software at the System Administrative level. They found that when a locally
logged-in user tries to use the Unisoft software, it does not operate correctly.
This could potentially be due to certain permission-related problems. Therefore,
it is advisable to grant necessary permissions to the local user who is logged
in and utilizing the Unisoft software. Some of those issues and others follow.
If there are problems installing or running the Unisoft software, it is usually
due to one of following three factors that were wrongly restricted on a normal
installation:
- Allowing read/write access to the
folder and files in the default installation directory (C:\Program Files
(x86)\Unisoft). This allows the Unisoft software to access and modify the
necessary files for the software to run properly.
This read/write access must be granted on the user of the Unisoft software
level.

where USERXXX is the user account that you are logged
into.
Document folder help.
- Allowing read/write access to the Unisoft
Documents folder. This applies to Unisoft software version 5.24.0.0 and
newer. The Documents folder is located in directory
c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft , where USERXXX
is the user account that you are logged into. This read/write access must be
granted on the user of the Unisoft
software level.
Permissions help.
Generally, each user on a computer has their own profile and their own set of permissions, which prevents unauthorized access to files and folders
for security reasons. As mentioned above, normally these permissions are set properly when the Unisoft software is first installed. However there may be situations when these permissions might need to be manually configured
due to security installation restrictions.
When installing or
running the Unisoft Pronto software the following message windows are
examples that may appear if there is a permissions issue or a Document
folder issue.
If the above message is displayed then the software
is seeing a .LIC license file & the issue could be it is not the
current license file. When you see this message the software in this
mode
will either not operate or operate but some features will be disabled.
For software version 5.24.0.0 or newer, another problem when you may get the
error message above "It appears that
the license is not valid…." is
when the Unisoft Documents folder does not exist or does not have the
correct files in it or the correct permissions. The Documents folder is located in
directory c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft ,
xwhere USERXXX is the user account that
you are logged into. There should be 10 files in that folder. Details are
below.
If the above message is displayed then the
software is not seeing the markupx.ini file. When you see this message
the software in this mode
will usually operate but many features will not work.
The markupx.ini is located in the
Unisoft Documents folder
and the problem is either that it does not exist or does not have the
correct files
in it or the correct permissions. The Documents
folder is located in directory
c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft ,
where USERXXX is the user account that
you are logged into. There should be 10 files in that folder. Details are
below.
If the above message is displayed this is usually a file / folder permissions issue. Details are below.
If the above message is displayed this
is usually a file / folder permissions issue. Usually the issue is that the
user does
not have correct permissions for the main installation folder
which is by default c:\program files (x86)\unisoft . Details are below.
If the above message is displayed this
is usually a file / folder permissions issue. Usually the issue is that the
user does not
have correct permissions for the main installation folder
which is by default c:\program files (x86)\unisoft . The characters in
the file name will be IM_XXX.DLL where the XXX will vary
depending on which .DLL is being used. Details are below.
If the above message is displayed this is usually
a file / folder permissions issue. Details are below.
For software version 5.24.0.0 or newer, if when the
BOM or XYR importing template windows are display and there are no templates
listed
as in the figure above, or the templates are not saving then
the issue is that the Unisoft Documents folder does not exist or
does not have the
correct files in it or the correct permissions. The Documents folder is located in directory
c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft, where
USERXXX is the user account
that you are logged into. There should be 10 files in that folder. For
software version 5.23.2.0 or
older this same problem may occur and is
usually cause by a different issue. Details are below.
It is advisable to try the other fixes outlined on this webpage first,
however if you do wish to test for a permissions issue you can do the following.
To see if it is a permissions issue that is causing the problem of the Unisoft software not starting correctly then try installing the Unisoft software to a new directory that you the installer creates.
Test folder: A test for a permissions issue is to try installing the Unisoft software to a folder that you create that has lower permissions access on the C: root drive for example c:\unisoft-test If the software runs ok from that folder that you created then that usually indicates that the other folder you had trouble installing too has a higher access permissions issue.
Below is information about a permissions issue and how to fix it.
Below is an explanation from the Unisoft software department of one possible issue on when the license gives the message "It appears that the license is not valid…."
When the Unisoft software is used we check for backdating by surreptitiously writing a date. When the executable for the Unisoft Pronto series of software modules which is called MARKUP.EXE can't write the file, it displays the "It appears that the license is not valid…." message and switches to shareware mode.
To write the file, of course, MARKUP.EXE needs write-access to the installation directory or directories. So when the "It appears that the license is not valid…." message is displayed it is usually that the user set up the directory or directories on the network as read-only. Therefore, the user needs to set permissions on the Unisoft installation directories to read/write.
For software version 5.24.0.0 or newer, the problem when you may get the error message above "It appears that the license is not valid…." is when the Unisoft Documents folder does not exist or does
not have the correct files in it. The Documents folder is located in directory c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft , where USERXXX is the user account that you are logged into. There should be 10 files in that folder.
For software version 5.24.0.0 or newer, another problem where you
may get the error message "It appears that the license is not valid…." is
when the Unisoft Documents folder
does not exist or does not have the correct files in it. The
Documents folder is located in directory
c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft , where USERXXX is the user account that
you are logged into. There should be 10 files in that folder, all
beginning with markup similar to the figure that
follows.
If the folder or the files are not there, the error message "It appears that the license is not valid…." will be displayed. If the installation was done via the normal installation
file, the Documents directory should be set up properly, and if the directory does not
exist or there are not 10 files in that directory, you can try a
reinstallation of the software. If that does not fix the issue, then contact
Unisoft, and it can usually be resolved in a few minutes.
If you wish
you can also try to set up the folder yourself by:
- First creating the Documents folder and then
downloading the 10 files in a zip file at
https://www.unisoft-cim.com/download/markupx-full-set-of-10-files.zip
- Next unzipping that file into that into the Documents folder you
created.
Companies may have different network security settings. Here's a note
from an IT administrator on an issue with the Documents folder and how it
was solved:
"When running the Unisoft
updater installer with a standard user account, it requests elevation to
admin privileges. This causes the installer to place files in the admin's
Document folder.
Since the
users have standard accounts, these files needed to be moved to each User's
Documents folder. After this migration, the Unisoft application stopped
generating errors."
For a permissions issue you may also see the following messages.
Information on setting permissions follows.
The permissions fix that follows has worked for many Unisoft customers with permission issue problems.
Usually the main problem if the Unisoft software does not start correctly is permissions issues with the main directory where the Unisoft software is stored which is by default c:\program files(x86)\unisoft or c:\program files\unisoft .
It is advisable to work with your IT department or other network professional on this type of issue.
Additionally, usually for Unisoft software versions earlier than 5.24.0.0 only, there may be a second permissions issue once the Unisoft software starts successfully and this issue is with the MARKUP.INI file which stores user configuration information and further details on this is below.
After the Unisoft software is installed and if it is not starting successfully then on the installed computer navigate to the Unisoft directory and give the Domain Users full-control to the folder the Unisoft software is install to which is by default c:\program files(x86)\unisoft or c:\program files\unisoft . The domain users is a group that every user on the network is a part of.
After this is done click the Advanced tab, select the Domain Users group from the list and click Replace all child object permissions. This will then give the users permissions to all files and folders in the directory.
NOTE
1:
If the software still doesn't seem to work but the software is actually starting
and there's error message(s) along the way such as "It appears that the
license is not valid…." and/or
"File markupx.ini does
not exist in the Documents folder." then our software department has
directed IT Administrators to do the following so you may want to try this:
From the Unisoft code there can be several possible
reasons for the error message(s). The most likely reason would be that files
in the Unisoft directory under Documents either do not exist or are not
accessible.
The Unisoft code accesses the Documents
directory through the Registry. The code expects the path to the Documents
directory to be
in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders\Personal .
So, first, please check as the non-administrator user
that the value in the Registry matches the actual location of Documents.
Second, please check that the Documents directory contains the Unisoft
subdirectory and that MARKUPX.INI and MARKUPX.USR exist in that subdirectory.
Assuming that the Registry entries are correct then the
next thing to try is to start with a virgin copy of the critical Unisoft files.
As Administrator:
1. Uninstall and
then do a fresh install of our software. Do not do any testing.
2. Delete the user’s Unisoft directory in Documents.
3. Copy the newly installed Unisoft directory to the user’s Documents directory
and change the permissions as appropriate.
Now, as the user, see whether MARKUP.EXE works.
NOTE 2: If the software still doesn't seem to
work but the software is actually starting and there's error message(s) along
the way such as "It appears that the license is not valid…." and/or
"File
markupx.ini does not exist in the Documents folder." then our software
department has indicated this procedure that follows is an option that has
worked (Note: By allowing a user to
have administrator privileges as
outlined below for any amount of time, it may defeat the purpose of having a
shop where you strictly control what users can put on their machines (as well
as some other operational reasons) and so allow Administrator status in only
a brief policed manner.).:
1. Log in as
administrator (most machines in the shop are apt to have a separate
administrator login in addition to the normal user login).
2. Give administrator permissions to the normal user.
3. Ask the user to login.
4. Do the install.
5. Log out.
6.
Log in as administrator.
7. Remove the normal
user’s administrator permissions.
8. Log out.
Now the normal user should be able to run Unisoft software Markup.exe .
NOTE 3: If the software still doesn't seem
to work other customers have reported success by installing the Unisoft software
as a Sub-Administrator. So to try this option first uninstall the Unisoft
software which was installed initially as an administrator and then log in
as a Sub-Administrator and reinstall the Unisoft software then set the
permissions on the files and folders while logged in
as a Sub-Administrator.
User of the Unisoft software needs to have read/write access
to the MARKUPX.INI or MARKUP.INI file, which stores user configuration data.
For software version 5.24.0.0 or newer the MARKUPX.INI file is usually
located in directory c:\users\USERXXX\documents\Unisoft , where USERXXX is the
user account that you are logged into.
For software version 5.23.2.0 or
older the MARKUP.INI file is located in the Windows directory. By default this
file is located in directory c:\windows\markup.ini . Note on some PCs running
Windows
the latest copy of your Markup.ini file maybe in the VirtualStore
directory and not in the Windows directory. It is advisable to check this
directory and if the Markup.ini file exists there then backup that
copy of the
Markup.ini file because that's where your most recent personal copy of that file
resides and not in the Windows directory. If you do have a VirtualStore
directory it will usually be under your
USER directory and an example follows:
c:\user\joe\appdata\local\virtualstore\windows and the file you're looking for
there is the Markup.ini file and if the file exists please make a backup copy
and
not the same file in the Windows directory. If the User does not have
access to the MARKUPX.INI or MARKUP.INI file the Unisoft software will start
but BOM and XYR importer templates and other
user configuration data won't be
accessible. For Unisoft software versions earlier than 5.24.0.0 the MARKUP.INI
is usually located in the c:\windows directory.
IMPORTANT: The following applies only
for Unisoft software versions earlier than 5.24.0.0 .
The markup.ini file stores user configuration data such as BOM and XYR importer templates and other user data. The markup.ini file is normally located in the
c:\windows directory.
The markup.ini file may need its permissions adjusted if with the Unisoft software started the BOM or XYR importer template window is blank and newly created templates are not being saved properly along with other user configuration data.
The markup.ini requires read and write permissions for the user that is running the Unisoft software. Normally these permissions are set properly when the Unisoft software is first installed.
If you are experiencing a problem with the BOM or XYR template window being blank and templates created are not being saved along with other user configuration data then adjust the permission settings on the markup.ini file similar to permissions issues outlined above for the main directory where the Unisoft software is installed.
----------------
Infrequently for this same issue of the BOM or XYR template window being
blank we have run into another situation where the User login that can be
seen for example from Task Manager under the User tab
is not listed as it should be under the Users folders.
In this case what has worked is to completely
uninstall the Unisoft software and reinstall it.
It is advisable to work with your IT department or other network professional on this type of issue.
Granting users full access to the Unisoft folder generally will resolve license problems. To summarize:
